Repair or replace

Fog between the panes is a verdict, not a flaw

When moisture appears between the two panes of a thermos unit, the seal has failed: silica desiccant inside the spacer is saturated and no cleaning will fix it. A unit made before 2010 often shows this after fifteen winters of freeze-thaw cycles around Mont-Bellevue. We replace the insulated unit itself and keep the sash, which costs far less than a whole new window.

A crack is another story. Under 5 cm, away from the edge and outside the driver's sight lines, a resin repair holds. But a crack that reaches a corner spreads with the next cold snap: glass keeps contracting at −25 °C even when the house is warm. We tell you straight whether repair makes sense, because a bad repair costs more than the pane it was supposed to save.

How we work

We measure on site, never over the phone

A 1970s casement in the Saint-Élie district and a newly built tilt-and-turn are not measured the same way: old frames settle, walls go out of square by several millimetres over the decades. We take six measurements per opening, top, middle and bottom, then cut to the smallest. That is why our glass fits the first time, without foam filler to hide a gap.

  • Tempered, sealed-unit and laminated glass cut to measure at the workshop
  • Old sashes taken apart, reglazed and re-caulked in the workshop
  • Emergency boarding-up before the replacement glass arrives
  • Interior trim and finishing redone after every installation

What changes nothing and what changes everything

The brand of the window matters less than its glazing bead and its spacer. A warm-edge spacer and dual-band seal buy ten extra years against fogging, whatever the label on the frame. When we rebuild a sealed unit, we always install warm-edge spacers: they cost barely more and stop the cold ring that forms along the window edge in January.

In winter we work in stages: emergency boarding-up first when the opening faces outdoors, then the definitive glass once the unit is cut. A house loses much less heat through a boarded opening than through a cracked pane left in place, because the plywood blocks wind-driven air that strips the insulating film along the glass.

Testimonials

They had a broken pane, then peace of mind

★★★★★

Board-up, then tempered glass — patio door

“A hailstone cracked the patio door glass on a Sunday evening. Temporary boarding-up Monday morning, new tempered pane installed Thursday. Nothing else to say.”

Carole L. — Rock Forest

Four sealed units replaced, frames kept

“Four thermos units fogged up in the same house built in 2004. Only the glass was replaced, keeping the frames: half the price of full windows, and no more fog.”

Jean-Marc T. — Magog

Storefront swapped overnight, shop open next morning

“Storefront replaced overnight so the shop never closed. Measured Tuesday, installed Wednesday at 11 p.m., spotless silicone work.”

Sophie D. — centre-ville de Sherbrooke

Service area

Sherbrooke and five towns where winters hit harder

Around Sherbrooke, housing stock varies fast: post-war village houses in Richmond and Windsor still carry wooden sashes that we reglaze rather than condemn, while recent Magog developments run almost entirely on factory sealed units. Two ways of working, two kinds of stock — the same van covers both.

Distance matters for emergencies: a shattered storefront in Coaticook or a break-in in Val-des-Sources requires a boarding-up crew that knows the roads in a snowstorm. We schedule replacements by area, so a single trip serves three houses in the same town instead of three round trips.
